INDEPENDENCE — Friday, July 5, 2024: The Independence Mustangs softball team had a five-game winning streak snapped on Friday night when they hosted Beckman Catholic.
This game means nothing in the grand scheme of things because the postseason brackets have already been scheduled. But they played the game to keep the girls sharp for Thursday’s first-round matchup with Oelwein.
It was not a good night for the Mustangs, who lost to the Blazers by a score of 15-7. The Mustangs pitching surrendered 14 hits and seven walks in this high-scoring affair.
Senior Allison Kleve gets the loss, giving up eight earned runs in 4.1 innings of work, walking three and striking out 5. Sophomore Liberty Brown came on in relief and went the rest of the way, surrendering five earned runs on five hits, walking 4, and striking out one.
Freshman Khloe Prenosil led the Mustangs’ offensive attack with two hits, including a double. Junior Kali Washburn drove in two runs with a single and bases-loaded walk, while senior Havana Griffith knocked in two.
The Mustangs are now 20-18 on the season and will prepare for their 1st-round game against Oelwein (9-16) on Thursday, July 11th.
