INDEPENDENCE – Roman Johnson has earned his Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement rank within the Scouts BSA program. Johnson is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a significant service project benefitting his community, faith organization, or school demonstrating leadership to earn his Eagle. Johnson chose to create an oversized chess board at the Independence Public Library for the community to use. He chose the project because he has grown up playing chess and wanted an opportunity for kids to learn to play with a fun large set. Johnson also hosted a chess class to teach kids in the community how to play.
Roman Johnson started his scouting career when he was in 1st grade as a Tiger Cub with Pack 3075 in Independence. He moved through the ranks and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 47 in Independence where he continued to earn the various ranks until he reached Life Scout. Earning Eagle Scout rank has always been a goal for Johnson so there was no doubt that he would work hard to achieve it. Johnson has worked with younger scouts and served as a mentor to others in his troop.
Johnson joins other outstanding American citizens who have become Eagle Scouts, among them former President Gerald R. Ford, Jr., astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, cinematographer Steven Spielberg, and the former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Johnson is a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and is active in bowling, esports, robotics, golf, Order of the Arrow, 4H, and µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍø. He is the son of Andrew and Amanda Johnson of Rowley.
Johnson would like to thank Travis Schwartz for his guidance and generosity throughout the project. He would also like to thank the library board for accepting his project idea. Johnson encourages other scouts to earn their Eagle Scout rank and to gain the many skills and knowledge he has learned from the Scouts BSA program.
