An incredible image shows the spring equinox from space.

On Friday, at 9:01 a.m. UK time, the Sun appeared directly above Earth’s equator, marking the astronomical event that signifies the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

EUMETSAT, the European satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, captured the picture with Meteosat-12, Europe's most advanced weather satellite.

They said: "Today at 10:01 CET the Sun was directly above Earth’s equator, marking the spring equinox!

"At this moment our planet is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun, creating nearly equal day/night. This stunning image was captured by Meteosat-12 earlier this morning."
