The Waverly-Shell Rock boys tennis team used its depth to make quick work of Grundy Center on Saturday to advance to the team substate final on Wednesday, May 15.
W-SR hosted the two-round, three-team pairing and had a first-round bye. Grundy Center topped Iowa Falls-Alden, 5-1, in the morning to advance to play the Go-Hawks in the second round. The format begins with singles matches and the first team to five wins, whether in singles or doubles, advances and any other matches being played end at that point.
The Go-Hawks’ No. 2 through No. 6 singles players all won before Benny Ramker’s match at No. 1 singles was finished. Daniel Becker picked up the fifth singles win, which ended Ramker’s match early in the second set.
Winning for the Go-Hawks: No. 2 Luca Myers, 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Matthew Judka, 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Brady Willis, 6-1, 6-1; No. 5 Luis Portillo, 6-0, 6-0; and No. 6 Daniel Becker, 6-3, 6-0.
