Students at Waverly-Shell Rock schools can now benefit from a new program created by fifth-through-12th-grade Media Specialist Lyndsi Luck, who wrote a W-SR Foundation Smart Money Teacher Grant for the purpose of creating Museum Kits for students to check out.
Roger Wilcox, a former W-SR School Administrator and current W-SR Foundation Board Secretary, stated in a press release that the ultimate goal of the new Museum Kits is “bringing the hands-on learning experience of museum exhibits into the classroom.â€
“The kits created utilized literature already in the W-SR Middle School collection and coupled that with hands-on learning manipulatives,†Wilcox said. “All kit themes are based on traveling exhibits from our nation’s largest museums. Recently Pompeii was featured as an additional cost exhibit at the Chicago Natural History Museum. Now we can offer a Museum Kit with literature — both fiction and nonfiction — pertaining to Pompeii, along with hands-on learning manipulatives pertaining to the topic, location and time period.â€
Luck said she was excited to bring the program to students.
“We are now able to expose students to a wide range of diverse topics. Not only does this provide an exciting and engaging learning experience, but it also helps to level the playing field by making these resources available to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background,†she added.
