The City of Oelwein’s Demolition Assistance Program has helped many property owners remove dilapidated or otherwise unfit homes from Oelwein’s neighborhoods for quite some time. Passersby saw the work of that program Tuesday near Parkside Elementary.
On Jan. 13, 2025, Council approved an application to Dawn and Robert Reiter for the removal of the home located at 220 6th Ave SW. The one-story home was in need of updates as per Code Enforcement and had sat vacant since August 2024.
Council approved the Demo Assistance application for $3,750, and Bryan Construction made quick work of the structure Tuesday.
According to the demolition application, the Reiters plan on building a garage upon the 50x140 (0.16 acres) lot and expanding their adjacent property to the south once the home is removed and filled in.
Assistance is granted up to 50 percent of total demolition costs not to exceed $5,000. Funds are available from the City through the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. Along with the application, two demolition bids must be included for consideration. All qualified applications will be reviewed and up for approval by the City Council.
