WATERLOO—The Hawkeye Community College commencement ceremony is set for Friday, May 9, at 7:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the McLeod Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus, located at 2501 Hudson Road, Cedar Falls. The event recognizes fall 2024, spring 2025, and summer 2025 graduates.
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Maggie Smith, Supervisory Health Veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After completing an associate degree in Animal Science and a certificate in Meat Science at Hawkeye, Dr. Smith continued her education at Iowa State University. There she completed her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, then earned her doctorate from ISU’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Her passion for working with food production animals started at Hawkeye while working with the cattle and pigs on the Hawkeye Farm. Now, Dr. Smith’s career is dedicated to assessing the health of food production animals and the food safety of the meat products they produce that go out to the consumer. Dr. Smith is originally from Waterloo and currently resides in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Students speaker will be Olivia Hammel, a native of Fairfield, Iowa, and a graduate of both welding and nursing programs at Hawkeye.
