More than 45 people joined together on Tuesday, Jan. 28, for a rousing musical adventure to celebrate National Kazoo Day in downtown Waverly.
Troy Collins, the owner of TSJK Insurance at 103 E. Bremer Ave., said in a prior interview that he organized and hosted National Kazoo Day for two simple reasons.
“This is for fun,†Collins said of the event he saw in a chain email he gets each week about national days of celebrations. “But, this is also to help fellow businesses in downtown.â€
The goal, he added, was to draw shoppers and others to the downtown area, which he said has been negatively impacted by the closure of the Bremer Avenue Bridge.
On Tuesday, kazoo lovers of all ages descended upon his offices to join together under the musical leadership of Waverly-Shell Rock High School Band Director Jim Vowels.
By the time the event got going, more than 45 people were packed inside Collins’ business offices tooting away with their gift kazoos.
The assembled "kazoo krazies" belted out three tunes before calling it a day.
Afterward, Collins said he was grateful to all who came to have some fun and support local businesses.
“Next year, we hope to expand it,†Collins said of his kazoo festivities. “Maybe we’ll do a kazoo parade down Bremer Avenue.â€
